Yoga for Kindness for Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week (18th - 24th May) runs each year with a different theme. This year's theme is kindness, where we are encouraged to go out and take part in random acts of kindness. Because #kindnessmatters and it's good for your mental health and wellbeing.

Inspired by this cause I've put together this 30 minutes beginners yoga class for kindness.

We'll start by setting an intention for the class, then move into some heart opening poses. Finishing with a kindness meditation.

The article that goes with this class can be found here:

Day 30: Morning Yoga Challenge - Confidence

Congratulations you made it to Day 30!!! Well done!!!

We end this challenge with a sequence dedicated to confidence. It takes confidence to try something new, to go outside your comfort zones and to accept that sometimes we will fail or things won't go how we had planned, and that's ok. And if you're new to yoga, I hope this challenge has given you the confidence to maybe try a full lengthen class or maybe even an in-person class.

How did you find the challenge? Do you feel different now to when you started the challenge 30 days ago? I would love to hear how you got on - if you'd like to share, please drop a line in the comments below :)

Thank you for practicing with me and I hope you've enjoyed this challenge, learnt something new and been inspired to continue practicing.

Day 29: Morning Yoga Challenge - Let it go!

Earlier in the challenge we did a few variations of sun salutations - this class we'll be doing a moon salutation. Sun salutations are for creating energy and heat. In a moon salutation we are creating a sense of relief and soothing, and well, just letting it go!

You may like a few props - maybe a couple of bricks or books would work fine.

Day 28: Morning Yoga Challenge - Yin Yoga

We'll try something a little different today - a Yin yoga taster practice! Yin yoga is a much slower practice, where we will hold poses for a longer period of time. That said, because it's slower, it doesn't mean it's easier, as often people find it hard to stay still in the poses. So be kind to yourself if you are finding it challenging.

We'll be holding poses in this taster for 1.5 - 3 minutes, but in a normal lengthen Yin class you could be holding a pose for up to 10, even 20 minutes.. As we hold poses for a longer period of time in Yin, it's a great stepping stone towards a meditation practice, and has many of the same benefits.

It's also important to 'find your edge' when moving into a pose - which means the pose might not look like it does in your other yoga practices. As we hold the pose for longer, you will naturally feel yourself get deeper into the pose, but it's important to not feel any pain or numbness. While in the pose, see if you can release the muscles and melt into the pose.

You might like some props to support you in the poses - as we will be holding them a little longer than usual.
- 1 block, brick or book (depending on thickness – books)
- Strap, belt or rolled up towel
- Bolster or cushion/ pillow
- Towel or blanket

Day 27: Morning Yoga Challenge - Expand

Expand the midsection of the body with some gentle movements to bring awareness and space between the lower belly and the chest. We will end the practice with a short breath awareness relaxation, where we’ll be working with the 3 parts of our breath.

You may like to have a pillow or bolster for the relaxation at the end of class.

Day 26: Morning Yoga Challenge - Lengthen

Feel a couple of centimetres taller with this morning practice which will focus on creating length in the body.

Give yourself a little time after the poses to notice whether the body feels different to the start of the practice, or pose.

The practice is a little longer than the usual 10 minutes, as I really wanted to have time to focus on creating some lengthen in the back body, practically the hamstrings.

Gentle Beginners Yoga Class #withme #athome #letsyoga

If you've never tried yoga before, but always wanted to give it a try, or are quite new to yoga, or just prefer gentle yoga classes - then this class might be for you!

This is a full length yoga class, with a few different modifications and alternative options. We do use a few props - which you can use as well, if you like - a couple of old books, towels or cushion, and maybe a chair would be fine.

There are a few standing poses and a balancing pose - just to challenge us a little bit, but feel free to use a chair, or just leave out that section if you like. At the end of the day this is YOUR yoga practice. It's about YOU. And it's about what makes YOU FEEL GOOD.

I know it's easy to compare ourselves to others, but in reality we are all different, we look different, our bodies are built differently, we've been on different journeys throughout our life - the shapes we make in yoga will look different to the people around us. But as long as it feels good for us, we are doing the pose safely and we don't feel any pain of discomfort, it doesn't matter. If anything, different is great - let's embrace it!

I was inspired to create this class after a number of people had told me they were to inflexible for yoga. I know social media might have us believe that yoga is for super flexible, super fit, super strong people only - but that's not true. In fact most yoga teachers can't do all the yoga poses and are also suffering with various injuries or tightness in certain areas from various activities (for me it's tightness from running and probably working at a desk job for most of my day) - it's just social media doesn't show this.

The truth is yoga is good for lengthening the muscles, which can help improve range of motion, which can make you more flexible. So if you're inflexible then actually yoga might be good for you. But, it's all about finding the right class and the right teacher - and that might be trying a few before you find the right one.

I wrote an article to accompany this class on my website - you can check it out here, if you like: https://www.kellysheldrick.com/2020/05/06/im-too-inflexible-for-yoga/

Of course, one class will not fit everyone, so if you didn't enjoy this class, don't let that put you off. You can always drop me an email and we could discuss maybe some different options, and try something else :)

And if you did enjoy this video, I'd be forever grateful if you could please like and subscribe to my channel.

Thank you for visiting and practicing with me today.

Day 21: Morning Yoga Challenge - Mindfulness

Mindfulness is bringing awareness to the present moment - to your body, mind and the environment around you. During this 10 minute practice you'll be guided through a body scan - which can be done, seated, standing or lying down.

For some people, mindfulness can:
- help you become more body aware
- reduce stress and induce a sense of calm and focus
- inspire creativity
- improve sleep

Similar to mindfulness, during yoga we try and bring awareness and connection to the mind and body. This can be quite challenge for some people at first, as we can be quite disconnected with our body, specific body parts and how our body is feeling. Thus, practicing mindfulness regularly can also help your physical yoga practice, by improving your overall body awareness as moving around the mat.

Day 20: Morning Yoga Challenge - Side Body

We don't often move side to side in our daily life, which means often we are quite tight in the sides of our body. This 10 minute yoga sequence will work on lengthening the muscles in the side (lateral) body. As we stretch one side, the nature of the types of stretches we'll do, will mean we'll also strengthen the side body muscles of the opposite side.
