What is a Vinyasa?

Ever heard in a yoga class, "Take your Vinyasa" or seen "Vinyasa" on a yoga timetable and wondered what it meant? This short class should answer those questions.

During this class you'll learn what a Vinyasa is and how to do one. Vinyasas do involve a bit of upper body strength. We'll run through two variations. You don't need props but might like some padding for the wrists/ hands.

Guided Relaxation for Sleep

A 15 minute Guided Relaxation to help you sleep. This Guided relaxation follows the Yoga Nidra principles.

Props:
- None, though it's good to get nice and comfortable. This relaxation you can even do in bed before going to sleep.

If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed, stressed or having issues sleeping - why not try a guided relaxation or Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra translates to "Yogic Sleep" and is a type of guided, restorative meditation, where we are trying to reach that dreamy state in between being asleep and awake. There is no wrong or right way to do a Nidra - whatever you experience is what your body needs at this present moment.

Benefits of a Yoga Nidra or Guided Relaxation:
- Helps to calm the nervous system by taking your focus away from your thoughts and just focusing on feelings within the body. This naturally slows the breath, which further relaxes and soothes the nervous system.
- Can improve sleep by relaxing the body - switching off the active mind. In this state our bodies slow down, our heart rate slows down, our breath slows down. This makes it easier to both fall asleep and stay asleep.
- Can help with emotional regulation - as we become more aware of our body, we are better able to observe how we are feeling, and choose how to respond. This can help us manage any feelings of anger or frustration arising.

Yin Yoga for Better Sleep

This is a 40 minute, beginners Yin Yoga class, designed to relax and soothe the nervous system, preparing the body and mind for a restful sleep.

This Yin class takes a more restorative approach, which means you will need a few props:
- a couple of pillows from your bed (or bolster if you prefer)
- a couple of yoga blocks or old sturdy books will work

In Yin we do hold the poses a bit longer than in other styles of yoga. In this class we'll be holding the poses for about 3 minutes each.

As always, yoga might be challenging, but it should never be painful, so if you do feel any pain, feel slowly come out of the pose, or adjust the pose to remove the discomfort. During this class I will give lots of different options for the poses. So feel free to try them out and see which is best for you.

I post a weekly yoga class on my YouTube channel - subscribe if you would like to be updated each week.

Chair Yoga for Seniors

This is a 15 minute chair yoga for seniors class. We'll be moving through some gentle poses, working from our feet all the way up the body to the head. The poses and movements we will take will help increase fluid to the joints, which can help improve mobility.

This short class I initially created for my 86 year old Nan, who was complaining of not being able to move as much as she used to. I thought I would also share it here, in case others wanted to share it with their loved ones.

Who this class is for?
Seniors or anyone with limited mobility.

And anyone that wanted a short, gentle full body practice.

Please remember to only work within your range of motion. Listen to your body and if you feel pain, please stop.

What do you need?
- A chair
- Maybe a couple of blocks or pillows, just to ensure your feet are fully supported by the floor and you can maintain good posture.

When to practice?
This class is ideal for anytime of day :)

Evening Yoga for the Spine

During this evening yoga for the spine class we'll spend the whole practice on the floor, moving through the 6 movements of the spine (lateral, forwards, backwards and twisting).

This practice will help to stretch and release tension in the spine and back. It will also calm the nervous system, preparing the body for rest/ bed.

What do I need?
- Yoga mat (optional)
- Pillow or bolster (optional)
- Wall (optional)
- Yoga belt/ strap or rolled up towel (optional)

Who is this class for?

Beginners and students of all ages welcome!

The class is quite a gentle, passive practice, where we hold poses for about 5 breaths each.

When to practice?

In the evening as this class is a great way to gently stretch the back and prepare the body for bed.

That said, it won't hurt to practice the class at other times during the day.
